African Centre of Excellence for Inequality Research

The African Centre of Excellence for Inequality Research (ACEIR) is a research grouping that engages in policy-relevant research programmes in the social sciences to generate solutions for national development. ACEIR has three research nodes: At the University of Cape Town, in the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU), the University of Ghana, Legon, in the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER); and at the University of Nairobi (School of Economics). The nodes bring together internationally eminent African scholars who are influential researchers in their country contexts and who have close working ties with their national statistical offices.

Researchers at the Southern Africa node of ACEIR at UCT work on measuring economic inequality in South Africa mostly using survey data, although administrative data on education or taxes are also used. This collection highlights important publicly-available datasets for poverty and inequality research in the three countries where ACEIR has research nodes.
