The National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS) is a panel survey funded by the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME), Government of South Africa. The DPME supports effective planning for and monitoring and evaluation of government programmes. Their sponsorship of the NIDS panel survey means policy research in South Africa can have access to timely and accurate national data. The survey is implemented by the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). As the first national panel study of individuals in South Africa, NIDS provides unique insights into the lives of individual South Africans over time. The study covers critical issues, such as poverty and well-being, household composition and structure, fertility and mortality, migration, labour market participation, and economic activity, human capital formation, health, education, vulnerability and social capital. To help people effectively use the NIDS data, NIDS provides example findings, scholarships, summary videos, and training on how to use the panel data.
